Gunung Payung Beach

Beach in Kutuh (South Bali).

Gunung Payung Beach is a strip of white sand at the foot of tall cliffs in Kutuh, on the south coast of the Bukit Peninsula below the Gunung Payung temple, and it is quieter than nearby Pandawa. It is reached by about 300 steps or by a shuttle bus down a steep road cut into the cliff. The reef breaks the swell well offshore, so the clear water by the sand is usually calm; kayaks can be rented and there are caves to explore, but the shallows are coral at low tide.

Gunung Payung Beach at a glance

  • For children: Good (3/5). Calm water inside the reef, but 280 steps or a shuttle down, coral underfoot at low tide and little sand at high tide.
  • Swimming: Very good (4/5). Calm inside the reef with a sandy bottom around high tide; at low tide the shallows turn to coral, so wear water shoes.
  • Surfing: Fair (2/5), for experienced surfers. A reef break well offshore, decent for intermediate surfers on good days; no board rental, and boards go down the steps.
  • Snorkeling: Fair (2/5)
  • Sunset: Poor (1/5)
  • Scenery: Very good (4/5)
  • Peace & quiet: Very good (4/5)
  • Food & facilities: Good (3/5)

  • Sand: White sand

Rated from 0 (none) to 5 (excellent), compared with the other beaches on our list.
