Batu Bolong Beach

Beach in Canggu (South Bali).

Batu Bolong Beach is Canggu's main surf beach, a stretch of dark volcanic sand that shares its name, meaning 'holed rock', with the Pura Batu Bolong sea temple beside it. Its soft, rolling waves suit beginners and longboarders, and surf schools and board rentals line the sand. It is busiest at sunset, and strong currents and a heavy shore break on bigger days make it better for surfing than for swimming.

  • Swimming: Fair (2/5). Waves, rips at both ends and loose longboards: swim only on small days, between the flags.
  • Surfing: Very good (4/5), beginners to experienced. Slow, rolling waves over sand and rock, Canggu's longboard and surf-school break; best from mid to high tide.
