Pererenan Beach

Beach in Pererenan (South Bali).

Pererenan Beach is a stretch of dark volcanic sand in Pererenan village, a few hundred meters west of Echo Beach, watched over by a 12-meter statue of the sea god Baruna riding Gajah Mina, an elephant-headed fish, on a rock outcrop. Its consistent lefts and rights suit intermediate and experienced surfers, beach bars and vendors renting loungers and surfboards back the sand, and sunset draws the biggest crowd. Strong currents and rocks make the sea here a poor place to swim.

Pererenan Beach at a glance

  • For children: Fair (2/5). Rocky shelves along the shore and strong rips make the water unsafe; fine for sand play below the Baruna statue.
  • Swimming: Poor (1/5). Strong currents and a rocky lava shelf along the shore; rarely safe, and red flags often mark no-swimming zones.
  • Surfing: Good (3/5), for experienced surfers. Lefts and rights over reef and rock at the river mouth, best at mid tide; a shallow inside shelf, not for beginners.
  • Snorkeling: None (0/5)
  • Sunset: Excellent (5/5)
  • Scenery: Good (3/5)
  • Peace & quiet: Good (3/5)
  • Food & facilities: Very good (4/5)
  • Easy to reach: Very good (4/5)
  • Sand: Black volcanic sand

Rated from 0 (none) to 5 (excellent), compared with the other beaches on our list.
