Kuta Beach

Beach in Kuta (South Bali).

Kuta Beach is a long, wide stretch of sand on the west coast and one of the first places in Bali to draw surfers and backpackers. Its sandy-bottomed breaks suit beginners, and surf schools along the shore rent boards and give lessons. It is busiest in the late afternoon, when crowds gather for the sunset; rip currents are common, so swim between the lifeguard flags.

Kuta Beach at a glance

  • For children: Good (3/5). Paddling in the whitewater between the lifeguard flags under close watch; surf and rips daily, and erosion leaves little sand in places.
  • Swimming: Fair (2/5). Rips run between the sandbars all along the beach: swim only between the red-and-yellow flags, and stay out on red-flag days.
  • Surfing: Good (3/5), beginners to experienced. Bali's classic learner beach, with soft sand-bottom waves and surf schools; the Halfway peak and Kuta Reef, by boat, suit stronger surfers.
  • Snorkeling: None (0/5)
  • Sunset: Excellent (5/5)
  • Scenery: Fair (2/5)
  • Peace & quiet: None (0/5)
  • Food & facilities: Excellent (5/5)
  • Easy to reach: Excellent (5/5)
  • Sand: Golden sand

Rated from 0 (none) to 5 (excellent), compared with the other beaches on our list.
