Museum Pustaka Lontar
Museum in Dukuh Penaban (East Bali).
Museum Pustaka Lontar is a village-run museum of lontar, Balinese palm-leaf manuscripts, in Dukuh Penaban, just north of Amlapura in East Bali. Villagers built it in 2017 to save family manuscripts; its open-sided pavilions hold several hundred, the oldest from 1625, on medicine, folk tales, poetry and family histories. Guides show how the leaves are prepared, and in a half-hour workshop visitors carve their name on one. Tirta Gangga is a short drive away.
With children
Children learn to write their name in Balinese script, carve it into a palm leaf with a small blade and rub in candlenut charcoal until the letters turn black, then take the leaf home. Best from about six, with an adult helping with the sharp blade. It is mostly under open-sided roofs, without air-conditioning; bring cash.
