Nyang Nyang Beach

Beach in Uluwatu (South Bali).

Nyang Nyang is a long, largely undeveloped white-sand beach below the cliffs southeast of Uluwatu Temple. A steep road winds down from the clifftop car park, 15 to 20 minutes on foot, and scooters can ride it to a lower parking area; a stairway of about 500 steps descends further east. Warungs with loungers sit on the western half, reef and strong currents make swimming risky, and at low tide you can walk past the rocks at the east end to the graffiti-covered wreck on neighboring Nunggalan.

Nyang Nyang Beach at a glance

  • For children: Poor (1/5). A long climb down, little shade, and reef with strong currents straight off the sand: not a beach for young children.
  • Swimming: Poor (1/5). Reef right off the shore and strong currents that pull out to sea, with no lifeguards; keep to a paddle at the edge.
  • Surfing: Good (3/5), for experienced surfers. Short, punchy reef rights for intermediate to advanced surfers, best on small swells at high tide; shallow reef and rips.
  • Snorkeling: Fair (2/5)
  • Sunset: Very good (4/5)
  • Scenery: Very good (4/5)
  • Peace & quiet: Very good (4/5)
  • Food & facilities: Fair (2/5)
  • Easy to reach: Fair (2/5)
  • Sand: White sand

Rated from 0 (none) to 5 (excellent), compared with the other beaches on our list.
