Mertasari Beach

Beach in Sanur (South Bali).

Mertasari Beach is a wide stretch of pale sand at the southern end of Sanur, on the paved beachfront path that walkers and cyclists follow north along the coast. The offshore reef keeps the water calm and shallow, and in the windy dry season it is a popular kitesurfing spot, with kite schools on the beach. In July and August, kite festivals here fill the sky with giant traditional Balinese kites.

Mertasari Beach at a glance

  • For children: Very good (4/5). Wide, soft sand, a shaded playground and calm, shallow water; at low tide the sea drains far out, so come at high water.
  • Swimming: Good (3/5). Calm but very shallow: at low tide there is too little water to swim, and kitesurfers use the lagoon on windy days.
  • Surfing: Fair (2/5), for experienced surfers. Flat inside the reef; boats leave here for the Sanur reef breaks, which work only on big wet-season swells.
  • Snorkeling: Poor (1/5)
  • Sunset: Poor (1/5)
  • Scenery: Good (3/5)
  • Peace & quiet: Good (3/5)
  • Food & facilities: Very good (4/5)
  • Easy to reach: Excellent (5/5)
  • Sand: White sand

Rated from 0 (none) to 5 (excellent), compared with the other beaches on our list.
